Church at Home (Week 6)

We have go into a routine now.

The morning is relaxed, unlike Sundays where we need to be at church for 10am.

We wake when the kids reach the point of helplessness. We don't rush breakfast or getting dressed. We might do our hair.

We don't allow regular TV but we are putting on Latter Day Kids you tube videos before church to distract then and invite the spirit.

We wait for our youngest to be put down for a nap. That then gives us 1-2 hours.

This week we mustn't forget hymnbooks.

Lesson

Who was king Benjamin? He was a good king. What are kings? What do kings do? If you were a king, what would you do? If you could make up on rule, what would it be? Maybe we can consider applying it.

King Benjamin didn't some of the things 'normal' kings do. He worked. He didn't want the people to work hard to pay for a fancy lifestyle for him. He worked hard so that he could give the best possible lifestyle for his people. He was a good king who knew Jesus and taught His teachings.

April 13 - 19 : Mosiah 1-3

King Benjamins address is one of my favourite talks/sermons in the Book of Mormon.

The thing I love the most about King Benjamin is that he is a king who worked among the people. He did so, so that he was not supported by them, but to show that he was supporting them. He wanted their life to be burdensome as little as possible.

I, myself, have labored with mine own hands that I might serve you, and that ye should not be laden with taxes, and that there should nothing come upon you which was grievous to be borne (Mosiah 2:14)

Another item I noticed was in chapter 1 of Mosiah. The initial verses of the book again teach about the importance of the plates. The importance of having the word. For this message to be repeated again, and yet we are still early in the Book of Mormon. It shows how much value the ancients placed in these.

In the run up to easter, we asked our eldest, 4yo, what easter was about. You could guess his answer. "Chocolate". As parents we looked at each other, hardly surprised at the reply but hopeful that we might have got a more meaningful reply. We knew we had a bit of work to do.

Jesus did good things but many people were afraid of what he did and what he taught. He taught something different to the custom and so others didn’t like being told they were wrong.

A few days later, I asked our eldest again about easter. While he still mentioned chocolate, he did give us jumbles up reply about Jesus being alive. We could ask for too much more than that. Something went in to the point where he was able to repeat it back to us.

Church at Home (Week 4) - General Conference

General Conference

General conference at hame has become quite normal now. So in terms of logistics, it was much like any other general conference weekend. The only difference for up, practically, was that our kids were 6 months older since the last one, so hopefully, a little more reverent.

We didn't expect them to sit through all of the sessions with us, nor all of any sessions. But we did expect then this year, to sit through some of any session and if they wanted to sit with us and listen we had some activities for them. But they were also free to play in other rooms if they wanted. But we made it clear to them, that mummy & daddy wanted to watch this.

This year, we were still heavily distracted, however we did manage to watch every session.

Normally I would start listening in the car too and from work. But now that I am working from home. This option is not really available to me. So I have yet to re-listed to it.

There has been some chatter about the second coming. The situation we find ourselves in with the pandemic is making people think it is the end of the world and talk more about the second coming. So there is a heightened sense of awareness about this subject. For me, I heard pretty much every speaker refer to it. That in itself must be a sign.

Today we all got dressed up for home church. As before, started 'church' as soon as we put our youngest down for a nap.

Reverence was a bit better this week.

The schedule evolved once we started the meeting. The video with president Nelson and family prayer was added after after we started.

We have spent some time making Sundays different to the other days of the week. We just need to make sure we continue to make some time for church related discussion throughout the week.

March 23-29 : Enos-Words of Mormon

Not had much time to study this week. Been at home this week 'home schooling' the kids.

However, I have come across a few good points.

I noted that we ofter associate Enos having a result with God. This is not what the scriptures say.

Verse 2 says "I will tell you of the wrestle which I had before God..." Before God. As in infant of Him. In his presence.

He didn't wrestle with God.

Also, Enos refers to his parents teaching. Kinda like how Nephi mentions his parents. These parents have taught their kids well. In the case of Enos. It seems he was taught well but did not necessarily have a testimony of his own. Eventually, the teaching of his parents started to mean something to him. And he prayed.

Church at Home (Week 2)

This week we will do things slightly differently. Mainly, make more of the primary aspect of our service.

So this week I will show the olive tree allegory video but then after we will discuss the similarities of this tree and Lehi's vision which my eldest by remembers.

I think my eldest is still to young to understand any of the metaphors but we can give it a go. We can draw a tree on a chalkboard and talk about the roots, trunk, branches, fruit and the fact that it needs nurturing.

A thought I did just have is that because we are focusing on the Sunday worship aspect in our home, we have taken the focus off the rest of the week. That said, it has been a crazy week.

As per last week. We held our meeting while our youngest was sleeping.

The kids were still irreverent at times.

We made things more interactive by drawing pictures of trees.
We are now binge watching latter day kids videos.
Isn’t technology marvellous.

We can access any of the scriptures right away. Including the sacrament prayers.

Church at Home (Week 1)

Today following the announcement that church meetings are suspended until the covid-19 flu blows over, was our families 1st 'sacrament meeting' at home. As I type this the kids are drawing a picture of Jacob teaching at the temple, or al least their 4 & 2 year old version of such a scene.

I've been attending church every week my whole life. I miss the rare meeting usually when away on holiday. This week, the closest comparison I can make to how this feels is a general conference Sunday.

After learning that all services would be cancelled I immediately recognised the need to make an active decision to choose to do something in our home. While I did make this decision and even made a few suggestions on the ward what's app group, I was not until Saturday afternoon I spoke with my wife about planning something.

My family consists of myself, my wife, my eldest boy (4), daughter (2) and youngest son (0).

During breakfast I planned a little schedule for our home service. After obtaining permission from the bishop the night before I was able include the sacrament in our little service.

We set the mood by playing book of mormon stories videos from you tube on TV. I didn't feel right leading our service in PJ’s, so I got dressed into Sunday clothes. We got the kids dressed up too. I set up the sacrament and my eldest watched closely, where I gave him a commentary of what we were doing to set things up.

Things that I have learned/enjoyed so far, in no particular order.

-With a young family, the pressure to get to church for 10am was lifted and we could start whenever was convenient for us. We still chose to hold our service part of the sabbath day in the morning. We started once we put our youngest down for a nap to keep disruption to a minimum.

-Planning a sacrament meeting in your home is a lot less stressful than a formal Sunday service. I've been in charge of leading Sunday services before and it is stressful. Always wondering if everyone who's been assigned is going to turn up etc. No pressure among your family. If kids get irreverent then you just pause the meeting and carry on once they have recomposed themselves. No worrying about what those on the pews next to you are thinking or how their behaviour is disrupting the service for others.

-My eldest was able to get a bit closer to the sacrament ordinance than ever. We never get to church early enough to see the sacrament being set up. So this was new to him. When I asked him to sit with the family while I administered the sacrament he was upset. He really wanted to get involved. So I invited him to hold my phone up so I could read the prayer. I then passed him the plate to pass to the rest of the family. Some might say that's a deacons responsibility and a 4 year old does not have the Aaronic priesthood, but many members on the pews at church are not ordained deacons. I know it is a fine line, but here we had a young boy who really wanted to help. I wasn't going to deny him that in our own home.

-No time scales. We didn't need to finish at 11. We could have a service as long or as short as needed.

-This weekend my wife & I have been suffering from sore throats and runny noses. Its not coronavirus, its gust a cold, but given the latest guidelines, had we attended church we may have been judged or criticised by some. Staying home and somewhat isolating was an option. This weeks announcement made it easier to make our stat at home more meaningful as had the announcement not been made we probably wouldn't have put so much effort into doing something at home.

Mar 9 - 15 : Jacob 1-4

Couple of ideas to start with.

Context. Who is Jacob?Brother of Nephi. Nephi seems to have entrusted him with the mantle of spiritual leader 1:18 and a phophet. He does say 'thus saith the lord'. 2:23, 25

Seek god before riches, then seek riches to do good

The idea that if we let our future generations know anything about us, we let them know we were righteous. How would that affect you if you knew your parents or grandparents were disciples of christ and played a part of building the kingdom of God? And the opposite, how would it affect you if you knew your parents or grandparents were unrighteous, and up to all sorts of no good behaviour.

The Lamanites are more righteous than the Nephites after such a short period of time.

I think as individuals we go through the pride cycle frequently. As a population, I think it takes time. But it did make me sad to see this so soon in the Book of Mormon.

The word anxiety is used 3 times by Jacob. 1:5, 2:3, 4:18

Because much of my study at the start of the week is done on my phone, I don't necessarily see until later that this weeks material wraps up 1 Nephi. As we come to the end of the 1st book of the Book of Mormon, are you struck by any overall message Nephi has for his audience, us?

This is what I want to explore this week as recommended by the manual. But with a little digression 1st which hopefully we will loop back to at the end.

1 Nephi 19:23

I did liken all scriptures unto us, that it might be for our profit & learning.

The children’s song Nephi’s Courage likens the scriptures to ourselves. V1: The Lord commanded Nephi to go and get the plates. V2: The Lord commanded Nephi to go and build a boat. V3: The lord gives us commandments and asks us to obey.

Hopefully we will be able to liken the scriptures to ourselves before we finish.

The manual says the following

If you ever wonder why bad things happen to good people like Nephi and his family, you may find insights in these chapters. But perhaps more important, you will see what good people do when bad things happen.

It then recommends record what you find in a table with headings like these: “Challenge,” “Nephi’s Response,” “Others’ Responses,” and “Results.” Why do you think Nephi was able to remain so faithful when others did not? Reflect on how the example of Nephi and his family can help you with your challenges.

Liahona, speculation it was a gift left by Ishmael before he died. An astrolabe or primitive form thereof.

I feel bad for these guys, there is no mention of daughters of Lehi & Sariah. So they left with their family possibly knowing they will have had nobody to marry. No posterity. Or were they?

The book of Mormon makes no reference to daughters of Lehi, but that does not mean he had none. Nephi dies refer to having sisters in 2 Nephi 5:6. But these could have been referred to as sisters in a similar manner to brethren, rather than brothers. What are the odds of having 4 boys, with no daughters in between?

Initial thoughts for the week

It is easy to focus on the stories of the broken bow, and the building of the ship. Ishmael's death and the Liahona. However, there is more in these chapters if we are willing to dig. I was listening to chapters 21-22 in the car on Monday morning. I struggled to comprehend what Nephi was going on about. However, the thought did come to me, to set myself the challenge and try to understand some of this. After all, Nephi and the historian prophets Moroni decided to leave it in for a reason.



If I'm not mistaken, Laman & Lemuel were read the words of Isiah by Nephi (chapter 21) and they had the same question I have. What does this mean? If I remember right, Nephi explains how we can understand it. So I shall have a go.

Midweek thoughts

The book of 1 Nephi is full of examples right from the start of two different types of people. The unfaithful and the faithful. I don’t mean unfaithful in the way we often use it in society today, but literally in terms of having a lack of faith and trust in God and thus not being prepared to keep the commandments. The other group, Lehi & Nephi, constantly turning to the Lord and trusting in him.

Already we have seen Laman & Lemuel disbelieve, be proven wrong by Nephi, repent and after a period of time forget God and fail to keep the commandments again & again. The pride cycle. The obtaining of the plates, the bow & lack of food, the endless journeyings, the building of a boat, the storm on the seas.

What message have we learned from Nephi over and over again in the last 22 chapters. Variations of the same theme. The Lord gives us no commandment we cannot accomplish. Another way of saying the same thing, Trust in the Lord.

So maybe we can ask ourselves, what can we learn from Lehi & Nephi to avoid the pride cycle in our lives. The answer is not to remain prideful and avoid humbling ourselves. But how do we stay humble? How do we maintain our faith?

My 1st is as I think imagine the scene Joseph describes about the religious excitement, I can't help but picture Moroni's anticipation as he watches the time get closer to show someone, a true seeker, the plates. JSH 1:4ish

Joseph felt lost and didn't know where to turn. He didn't know which church to join. He needed help and guidance. So he prayed. This reminds me of Lehi feeling lost and after so long he too began to pray. 1 Nephi 8:8. JSH 1:13ish

In Joseph's account he refers to two prayers. The 1st lead to the 1st vision. The 2nd lead to Moroni's visit. But there was a difference between the two. The 1st he was seeking the truth. The 2nd he was again seeking the truth, but having previously been given knowledge, more was required of him. In JSH 1:27-29 he say I betook myself to prayer and supplication to Almighty God for forgiveness of all my sins and follies, and also for a manifestation to me, that I might know of my state and standing before him; for I had full confidence in obtaining a divine manifestation, as I previously had one. He repented and then received and answer to his prayer.

This one might come across a negative but I wonder why Moroni had to hide the plates for 1,000 years, but then rather than Joseph hiding them again when he was done, Moroni took the plates back.

This last dispensation has currently been about 200 years. I don't know if that is very long for a dispensation. There is a general feeling that the end could be soon. A significant portion of people that have ever lived, have lived in the last 200 years.

Verse 10 made me laugh...In the midst of this war of words and tumult of opinions, I often said to myself: What is to be done? Who of all these parties are right; or, are they all wrong together? If any one of them be right, which is it, and how shall I know it? It sounds like politics. We've just had a general election. Did you think to pray?

Interesting thought from Oliver Cowdery

On reflecting further it was as easy to be seen that amid the great strife and noise concerning religion, none had authority from God to administer the ordinances of the Gospel. For the question might be asked, have men authority to administer in the name of Christ, who deny revelations, when His testimony is no less than the spirit of prophecy and His religion based, built, and sustained by immediate revelations, in all ages of the world when He has had a people on earth?

Or in other words, how can one claim to have authority from God to perform ordinances, as if God were alive, yet, claim he is sleeping and suggest revelations are no more?

Drowning in the depths of the fountain & Strange Roads - Drowning suggests being overwhelmed, strange roads is another suggestion of getting lost.
Enter into that building - Similar to falling away, but also making an active choice to being with another group of people.
Heeded them not - Faith

The rod of iron (iron rod) is the word of God. The last two weeks we have discussed the importance of the scriptures (the word of God). In Lehi's vision this is the only thing that leads to what makes Lehi happy.

Using the iron rod being the word of God idea. Lets explain this symbolism.

Where can we find the word of God these days? The Scriptures.
So what does clinging v24 or continually holding fast v30 to the scriptures look like? Me holding the scriptures in my hand?

It seems as though the journey to the tree is not an easy one. It is fraught with danger & difficulty. Great rivers, narrow paths, mists, persecution. Why couldn't/can't the journey be easy?

The obvious question is which group of people are you? Have you tasted the fruit & will you too listen to the scoffing and feel ashamed? What would be a good alternative attitude to take? What was Lehi's attitude. Sorrow for those that were not willing to try the fruit. Sorrow for those that decided other things were more important?

Four groups of people in Lehi’s dream. Who are they and can we relate to any of their behaviour? I suppose we like to think that we are the righteous group. But I suspect there is a bit of each group in each of us.

v34. As many as heeded them, did fall away. If you listen to those mocking, you will fall away. How do we hake sure we don't listen/heed?

Group 1 - People who pressed fwd but were lost in the dark mist.

“In 1 Nephi 8:21–23 we learn about the first group of people who pressed forward and commenced in the path that led to the tree of life. However, as the people encountered the mist of darkness, which represents ‘the temptations of the devil’ (1 Nephi 12:17), they lost their way, wandered off, and were lost. Notice that no mention is made in these verses of the rod of iron. Those who ignore or treat lightly the word of God do not have access to that divine compass which points the way to the Savior.”

Group 2 - People who pressed fwd through the mist of darkness clinging to the rod of iron and partook of the fruit. But felt mocked & ashamed and fell away.

“In 1 Nephi 8:24–28 we read about a second group of people who obtained the strait and narrow path that led to the tree of life. This group ‘did press forward through the mist of darkness, clinging to the rod of iron, even until they did come forth and partake of the fruit of the tree’ (verse 24). However, as the finely dressed occupants of the great and spacious building mocked this second group of people, ‘they were ashamed’ and ‘fell away into forbidden paths and were lost’ (verse 28). … Even with faith, commitment, and the word of God, this group eventually was lost—perhaps because they only periodically read or studied or searched the scriptures.”

Group 3 - Also pressed fwd through and partook of the fruit. No mention of falling away.

“In verse 30 we read about a third group of people who pressed forward ‘continually holding fast to the rod of iron, until they came forth and fell down and partook of the fruit of the tree.’ The key phrase in this verse is continually holding fast to the rod of iron. The third group also pressed forward with faith and conviction; however, there is no indication that they wandered off, fell into forbidden paths, or were lost. Perhaps this third group of people consistently read and studied and searched the scriptures. … This is the group you and I should strive to join.”

Group 4 - Those who were well dressed in the building, having not sought the fruit at all.

“A fourth group did not seek after the tree, desiring instead the great and spacious building as their ultimate destination (see 1 Nephi 8:31–33).”

1 Nephi 9

Nephi creates two sets of plates. Jacob 4:1 talks about the difficulty of writing these things down. Maintaining two sets of plates would have been hard work. It's not like Nephi could just pop down to the shops to get some new gold leafs. Last weeks video had a short clip of Moroni (maybe) forging and forming some new plates. Gold isn't exactly east to come by either. So these plates will have been extremely precious in more ways than 1.

Nephi knew not the purpose the lord asked him to maintain two sets. This is now the second example of Nephi acting with great faith to do something without knowing what God had planned. The 1st being heading into Jerusalem after two failed (and almost deadly) attempts to obtain the plates.
